چکیده

Motor imagery as rehabilitation method after stroke is becoming an important tool and is currently also heavily researched. One issue, however, is to quantify and monitor changes in the ongoing brain activity and to document brain plasticity. Here, we analyze the electroencephalogram (EEG) of hemiparetic stroke patients during left hand and right hand motor imagery in order to determine whether time-frequency maps of Event-Related Desynchronization (ERD) and EventRelated Synchronization (ERS), and single-trial classification by means of the Distinctive Sensitive Learning Vector Quantification (DSLVQ) method are suited to keep record of the changing brain activity. Modulation of event-related desynchronization during motor imagery with transcranial direct current stimulation in a patient with severe hemiparetic stroke: a case report.

Recently, surface electroencephalogram (EEG)-based brain-machine interfaces (BMI) have been used for people with disabilities. As a BMI signal source, event-related desynchronization of alpha-band EEG (8-13 Hz) during motor imagery (mu ERD), which is interpreted as desynchronized activities of the activated neurons, is commonly used. However, it is often difficult for patients with severe hemip...

EEG Event-Related Desynchronization of patients with stroke during motor imagery of hand movement

Brain Computer Interfaces (BCI) can be used for therapeutic purposes to improve voluntary motor control that has been affected post stroke. For this purpose, desynchronization of sensorimotor rhythms of the electroencephalographic signal (EEG) can be used. But it is necessary to study what happens in the affected motor cortex of this people. In this article, we analyse EEG recordings of hemiple...

Cortical activation during executed, imagined, observed, and passive wrist movements in healthy volunteers and stroke patients

Motor imagery, passive movement, and movement observation have been suggested to activate the sensorimotor system without overt movement. The present study investigated these three covert movement modes together with overt movement in a within-subject design to allow for a fine-grained comparison of their abilities in activating the sensorimotor system, i.e. premotor, primary motor, and somatos...

Increase in sensorimotor cortex response to somatosensory stimulation over subacute poststroke period correlates with motor recovery in hemiparetic patients.

BACKGROUND . Somatosensory input to the motor cortex may play a critical role in motor relearning after hemiparetic stroke. OBJECTIVE . The authors tested the hypothesis that motor recovery after hemiparetic stroke relates to changes in responsiveness of the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) to somatosensory input. METHODS . A total of 10 hemiparetic stroke patients underwent serial functional magn...

First Steps Toward a Motor Imagery Based Stroke BCI: New Strategy to Set up a Classifier

A new approach in motor rehabilitation after stroke is to use motor imagery (MI). To give feedback on MI performance brain-computer interface (BCIs) can be used. This requires a fast and easy acquisition of a reliable classifier. Usually, for training a classifier, electroencephalogram (EEG) data of MI without feedback is used, but it would be advantageous if we could give feedback right from t...
